Easter Celebrations and Fireworks. Malta 2011.

Easter is very much celebrated in Malta. The many, many catholic churches are highly decorated.  Processions are held on Good Friday, when statues of Jesus and biblical characters are carried through the streets on large plinths. One procession, in Mosta was followed by men covered in white gowns and hoods pulling along chains attached to their ankles, representing burden, the chains made an eerie sound as they were dragged along the quiet streets.

Other characters followed in detailed Roman period costume.
On Easter Sunday, processions take place again. We have photos of a procession in Valletta where the statue of the resurrected Christ is carefully taken from the church, carried into the streets to the applause and celebration of the gathered crowd and then carried slowly through the streets accompanied by a full band, clergymen and associated period characters.
There was a nice family celebratory atmosphere.

At the end of April there is a celebration of Malta joining the EU.  To mark this event, Malta annaully hosts an International Firework festival which is held in the Grand Harbour, Valletta.
The Grand Harbour is a spectacular venue for the display which is staged on barges floating in the harbour.  We watched from the high bastions in Valletta, alongside hundreds of people looking across towards the Three Cities.
The displays were made by competing factories with the best set to music—– the intro to Queens we will rock you— the beat/thud of fireworks launching.
The reflections in the water only adding to the quality of the long displays.
